Candlelight, Disco Balls, and a Packed Dance Floor at Villa la Joya
“If you’re on the fence about having a destination wedding, do it.”
We asked newlyweds Lindsay and Eric to share advice about choosing a destination wedding and how to make the most of the celebration:
“Stay present and really take in the day! If you are on the fence about having a destination wedding, DO IT! I can’t explain how special it was to have all my friends and family from all over on one big fun vacation. It was surreal at times.”
That energy was everywhere throughout this Villa la Joya Riviera Maya wedding day. Planned by Cristina and the Villa Planners team, the celebration blended elegant tropical design with a warm, relaxed atmosphere. From soft drapery and candlelight to disco balls and a packed dance floor later in the evening, the entire wedding felt personal, stylish, and genuinely fun.
A Soft, Tropical Ceremony Design
The ceremony setup immediately caught everyone’s attention.
Soft drapery transformed the Villa la Joya entryway for the ceremony space, adding movement and warmth to the stone backdrop of the villa. Instead of overpowering the architecture, the design softened it beautifully.
Light wood ceremony chairs felt perfect for the tropical setting, while floral pillars overflowing with greenery connected the altar naturally to the surrounding garden space. The abundance of greenery helped the ceremony feel connected to the tropical surroundings of Villa la Joya instead of separate from them.
The overall look felt organic, elegant, and very intentional.
One of the strongest visual details of the ceremony was the contrast between the bridal party's styling. The bridesmaids wore soft ivory dresses while the groomsmen stayed in classic black, creating a clean, modern balance against the creamy architecture and tropical greenery of the villa.
Gorgeous bride Lindsay, carried a lush bouquet of white flowers paired with a very traditional veil that worked beautifully with the timeless feel of the ceremony. Her dramatic embroidered veil and train flowed down the villa stairs, becoming part of the visual experience itself. The lace detailing of the train echoed the embroidery of the veil while adding softness and movement to the setting surrounding her.
The black-and-white portraits especially highlighted the scale and texture of the scene. The veil almost became part of the curved marble staircases and terraces of the villa itself.
Cocktail Hour with Champagne, Charcuterie, and Perfect Light
After the ceremony, guests moved naturally into the cocktail hour, where the atmosphere shifted into something warm, intimate, and relaxed. The gardens welcomed family and friends to settle into cocktail hour together.
Comfortable lounge seating created cozy spaces for conversation, while the late afternoon light gave everything a golden glow. Charcuterie boards, champagne, cocktails, and plenty of laughs carried guests into the next part of the evening effortlessly.
One thing Villa Planners always does beautifully is pacing. Nothing about the wedding day felt rushed. Guests had space to settle into every part of the experience instead of being quickly moved from one event to the next.
That relaxed energy is one of the things that makes destination weddings so special when they are done well. Everyone is fully present. Nobody is rushing home at the end of the night.
A Candlelit Reception Overlooking the Sea
As the sun went down, the reception space was completely transformed. Lindsay and Eric were more than ready for the party to begin.
The sweetheart table utilized the floral pillars and arrangements from the ceremony design, helping the entire wedding feel cohesive from beginning to end. Two dramatic chandeliers arched over the couple with the Caribbean Sea creating the perfect backdrop behind them.
Crystal candle holders, chandeliers, candles, and string lights filled the reception with a warm glow throughout the evening. Lighting changes everything at a wedding, especially at destination weddings where celebrations naturally transition from bright tropical daylight into outdoor evening receptions under the stars. This reception handled that transition beautifully.
Disco Balls, Dry Fireworks, and Full Party Mode
The newlyweds shared their first dance surrounded by dry fireworks, creating one of the biggest visual moments of the night. And definitely one nobody will forget.
“During our first dance, the sparklers malfunctioned and one of them shot off the dancefloor. Luckily, Lindsay's uncle is a firefighter and easily stopped the sparkler with his foot while taking a video. The planners and team working quickly managed the situation, and it definitely added some humor to the night.”
We loved the disco balls mixed into the white flowers and greenery. The contrast brought personality and fun into the decor while still keeping the overall aesthetic elevated and stylish.
Later in the evening, the bride changed into an incredible reception dress complete with intricate beading and glittering opera gloves that perfectly matched the energy of the party that followed.
A Packed Dance Floor All Night Long
Once the dance floor opened, the energy stayed high all night.
Guests filled the dance floor while the photo booth delivered some seriously fun moments throughout the evening. Between the music, lighting, disco balls, tropical night air, and oceanfront setting, the atmosphere felt electric in the best way.
One of the best moments of the night was seeing the bride and groom themselves spend time behind the DJ booth. That kind of energy changes everything at a wedding. When the couple is fully present and genuinely having fun, guests feel it immediately.
This wedding never felt stiff or overly curated. It felt welcoming, emotional, stylish, and genuinely joyful from beginning to end.
